Developer Contest Update

Gdc

The Bad News: We have to push back the announcement of the winner of the InstantAction Game Developer Contest. An exact date for the announcement has not been set, but we're working diligently to choose the winner and runner-ups.

The Good News: The finalists are all worthy competitors for the Grand Prize so we want to make sure we put enough time and thought into each game that has made it this far. That we need more time to make this decision is a testament to how good each finalists' game is. And I thought narrowing the submissions down to 5 was hard...

One prize that can be awarded to all the finalists right away is the InstantAction Cup-o-Noodle t-shirt. Those should be shipped out before the end of the week. Who wouldn't want to clad their torsos in such opulent finery?

If you haven't seen our InstantAction shirts yet, check them out here: www.garagegames.com/blogs/80057/14246

The Finalists:

Switching Gears/Survival
Trash: Wasted Earth
Day of War
CannonBattle
Grudgematch

The developers of these games provided some great links to more info about their submissions, which can be found in the comment section of the Finalist Announcement blog: http://www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=14327

InstantAction Spotlight

It's that time again.  That's right, time for the InstantAction blog Spotlight.  This user is probably one of the most active and helpful on InstantAction.  Constantly submitting bugs and helping out other users get up and running.  Mim is one of a kind.

Gamername: Mimelim

"A very long time ago, when I was... much shorter and a lot younger, I came into contact with a Commodore 64 machine. A machine that had a joystick that you could easily invert, simply by turning it 180 degrees. I still remember the huge floppy discs and the endless hours of waiting on tapes with funky coloured screens, it totally rocked my world and kept me busy for days and even years. That was until my uncle made my gaming addiction even worse. The times of playing with Lego was officially over and the Commodore soon found its way to a dusty shelf! My uncle showed me cool stuff like Wolfenstein, Heretic, Doom, Civilization, Settlers, Wing commander and all those golden oldies, you can bet that seeing such a wide range of games piqued my interest for games even more.

Indexphp_3

In the years following what my uncle showed me, I bought several systems like an Amiga, Nintendo 8bit (duck hunt p0w) and in the end the same sort of  PC system my uncle showed me games on. I basically went from Mario to Starcraft and from Total Annihilation to Duke Nukem. You can say that over the years, I’ve played my fair share of games.

During the years that followed, my online gaming “career” pretty much kicked off. Games like Total Annihilation, Boneyards (multiplayer service which was great btw), and Allegiance followed, a space-sim shooter which featured some awesome gameplay aspects. Luckily for me (well especially my father) we got cable after awhile which opened up the world of online gaming even more. Not much later, THE game came, the game that made Counterstrike look like a wrecked car... that game was Tribes 2. It was new, looked good and was like nothing I’d seen or played before. Not long after I started playing, my Tribes 2 career was the only thing I was interested in. I played a few teams in a competition environment and I still remember the days like it was last week. (shout out to my hindsight/df/et homeboys!)

Besides having games as a point of interest, I’m also an avid fan of watching movies. That combined with hanging around with my friends, appreciating the female form and enjoying a wide range of music basically sums up my idea of fun. After finishing my IT study (probably the reason why I like helping people out on the troubleshooting section Wink) I changed the course I was heading and switched to a marketing/management study which I am enjoying quite a lot at the moment.

I really believe in the potential that Instant Action has, as a gaming platform. Besides being enthusiastic about Instant Action, there is ofc ourse (you could have guessed) Legions but we will probably have to wait a little longer before the beta kicks off on that one. In the meanwhile if you wish to talk or just hang out, add me on IA (Mimelim) and slap me around in Think Tanks, crush bugs or simply start up some good conversations. (for conversations you could also join #legions on irc.quakenet and talk to me there Wink)

Well, thats basically it! Hope to talk to you all soon!
Cheers,
Mim

(ps. Cats > Dogs)"

We love you Mim!

Cyclomite and Wideload Shorts

6776

So while I was at GDC 2008 we had some of the guys from Wideload Shorts stop by to give some presentations about Cyclomite.  The first presentation by Scott Corley (Studio Director of Wideload Shorts) went over rather well and I couldn't help but notice a camera guy filming the presentation.  Taking a closer look I noticed that the camera had a rather well known name printed on it, Ziff Davis.  Figured cool, we'll see if anything gets posted up.

Upon arrival back to good old Eugene, Oregon, I checked 1up.com.  Sure enough they've got an entire write-up about the game including some footage.  Coverage includes single-player and multiplayer (co-op and versus).  Read the full article on 1up.com and check out Scott's explanation of the single-player mode in the video.

Of course, if you're already in the beta, you could always log in and give it a shot yourself.

Marble Blast Online Overviews

It looks like the guys over at www.360-live.com have beta accounts.  With those accounts they've played  some (probably a lot) of Marble Blast Online and posted about the new InstantAction exclusive multiplayer maps.  Included in the post are some awesome screenshots and rundowns of each of the new multiplayer maps.  Read it all at http://360-live.com/index.php/2008/02/22/marble-blast-online-new-multiplayer-maps/

GDC highlights from the IA crew

GDC 2008 has come and gone, and I've gotten some feedback from the GarageGames crew about some of the highlights they saw.  Both in and out of our booth, GDC had a lot to take in and explore.  Let's start this out with some sweet pictures.

IsraeliRD vs NardoPolo

IsraeliRD and NardoPolo (GG co-founder) were finally pit against each other in a game of Marble Blast Online. It was a battle of wits and speed, skill and luck?, fortune and fame (maybe not).  It was actually a really tight match for most of the game but one of these two pulled out on top.  To see who won, watch the vid below.

There you have it!  Think you have what it takes to beat these guys?  Find 'em on InstantAction and challenge them to a match.  Good luck.
